Hi Scouts!

Remember that our Monday Meeting for December 2nd is part 2 of the Cooking Merit Badge. We meet at 6pm at the Scout Building where we will be cooking dinner as the wrap-up for the Merit Badge. Coordinate with your Patrol to purchase food for a three course dinner with dessert. This meal should me the kind of meal that can be prepared at home or at a campout where food storage is not a problem.

Here is what you need to do:

1. Your goal is to create a three course meal. You should have a first course that is either a soup, salad, or appetizer. Your second course should include a meat dish, a vegetable dish, and a starch dish. Your third course is a dessert dish. The food cannot be canned. Here are some suggestions:

a. If you choose to do a soup you cannot buy canned soup like Campbell’s Soup. But for example a can of chicken broth, noodles, cooked chicken and spices makes a good chicken noodle soup. Use your imagination.

b. Boiled fresh vegetables makes a good vegetable as does a chopped lattice salad (you do the chopping) with dressing.

c. Good starches are potatoes, rice, or bread. You have to cook the rice or potatoes but I do not expect you to bake the bread.

d. Hot dogs are not a meat so far as this event is concerned. You must use a nice dinner type meat.

e. Dessert needs some preparation, but not necessarily heating. Some very good desserts can be done with mixing and refrigeration like Jell-O Pudding (not the premade kind) and we have the great outdoors to provide refrigeration. Dutch oven desserts are good but remember that we have to start a fire right at the start to make using Dutch ovens possible.

2. Your dinner is what you cook.

3. Keep track of your expenses and give me a cost listing for the meal.

4. We can use the fire pit if you need an open fire to cook, but remember that this meal cannot be a "tin foil" dinner.

5. Start as soon as you walk in the door Monday and we will pause briefly for the opening part way through the event.

6. Have fun with this - you will be learning skills that last a lifetime.

7. Bring water for clean-up.

See you there!

Sincerely,

Mr. Schulz
